The Middlebury Historical Society thrives thanks to the time and talents of community members who care about preserving our town’s story. Whether you’re deeply interested in local history or simply looking to contribute to a meaningful cause, we invite you to join us as a volunteer.
We are especially seeking volunteers to assist with the digitization and organization of our growing collection. This includes tasks such as scanning photographs, indexing records, cataloging objects, and supporting research and writing projects. Volunteers must bring their own computer and office skills—we do not provide training in IT or clerical work—but this is a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the operations of a historical organization.
Volunteering at the Historical Society is a great way to meet others, serve the town, and support historical preservation in a friendly and welcoming environment. For students, this work may also qualify for community service hours or academic credit, depending on school policies. We welcome volunteers with all backgrounds and interests—whatever your talents, there’s a place for you here.
In addition to our museum and archival work, the Society is engaged in a long-term project to clean and preserve headstones in Middlebury’s historic cemeteries. Volunteers are needed to help gently restore these gravestones, many of which mark the resting places of early settlers and local veterans. No experience is required—just a willingness to follow basic preservation guidelines and work outdoors in small groups.
